It always amazes me to see the variety of betting opportunities that online sportsbooks offer for hockey. The British and European books in particular have possibly the biggest betting buffet, which is perhaps due to a tradition of legalized and regulated online sports wagering. Besides all of the standard bets such as moneyline, puckline and totals, books like Bet365 and Bwin.com will post odds on such things as first team to score, team to score last, first team to score three goals, margin of victory, etc. Called prop bets, these are the type of betting options North American bettors would be used to seeing during big events like the Super Bowl. British and European books, however, offer these types of odds everyday on virtually every pro sports contest, including NHL games. For instance, in tonight’s matchup between the Canucks and Oilers, Bet365 already had 15 different betting options as of 8:30 a.m. ET. Let’s take a look at three selections: Prop Pick Bet365 Payoff on $10 First team to score Oilers 2.00 $20.00 Final score Canucks 4, Oilers 2 8.50 $85.00 Race to three goals Canucks 1.76 $17.60 European-based sportsbook Bwin.com had 23 options for the same game as of 8:30 a.m. ET. Let’s take a look at three selections at this book: Prop Pick Bwin.com Payoff on $10 When will first goal be scored? 9:00-60:00 min. 1.90 19.00 What comes first, goal or penalty? Penalty 1.35 13.50 Final score odd or even? Even 2.55 25.50 The betting options will multiply through the day as the book posts such things player-related props. And once the puck drops, betting hits frenzied pace as books offers live in-game wagering, meaning you can bet on such things as the next team to score, period winners, period totals, and more. Both Bet365.com and Bwin.com are safe, reliable, licenced sportsbooks that accept Canadian players (they currently don’t take Americans). I have accounts at both books and the user experience is top notch. I highly recommend both of them. To open an account, click here for Bet365.com or click here for Bwin.com.

Ever go to a junior hockey game and think about how much more exciting the game would be if you could bet on it? Well, European sportsbook Bwin.com posts odds on Canadian junior hockey, so for fun I thought I’d post a three-team parlay involving games scheduled for tonight in the Western Hockey League (WHL). But before we get to the picks, I’d be remiss if I didn’t touch on the ridiculous “moral and ethical” questions that some people undoubtedly have about the prospect of betting on junior hockey. First off all, I’ve never understood moral and ethical questions when it comes to betting on sports by consenting adults. It’s on this illogical plane where Bible-thumpers and bleeding-heart do-gooders converge. One group thinks betting is a sin (for the record, there is no mention of gambling in the Bible, not that I give the Bible much credence. And no, “money changers” don’t count.) The other group thinks it knows what’s good for us and that it must protect us from ourselves. Poppycock, I say to both. Secondly, junior hockey is a money-making business which hides behind the facade of good sportsmanship, athleticism and healthy living, much like college sports in the U.S. When I was a web editor at TSN.ca in the so-called “mainstream media,” former NHLer and television personality Nick Kypreos told me that junior hockey was essentially “semi-pro”. I couldn’t agree more.

For the past month, I’ve been posting free three-team parlays. I’ve posted seven in total and for each one I’ve wagered $10. Although I have gone 12-9 on my picks, I have not won a single three-team parlay – as I’ve said before, it’s hard enough to pick one winner, let alone three in one night. Since I bet $10 on each parlay, I’ve lost a total of $70. If, however, I would have wagered $10 on each game separately at one of my favorite online sportsbooks, such as Bet365.com or Bwin.com, I would have cut my losses significantly. For instance, betting on odds to win, which include overtime and shutouts, I would have earned $86.20 on my 12 winners and lost $90 on my nine losers for a net loss of only $3.80. If I had taken the more lucrative and slightly more risky regulation time odds, which do not include overtime and shutouts, I would have gone 10-11 on my picks. The reason I would have a losing record is because two games were decided in a shootout. So, even though I had the correct side in these two games, my wagers would have lost because I opted for the more lucrative regulation time odds. Nevertheless, despite having a losing record on my 21 picks, I still would have earned $97.10 on my 10 winners and lost $110 on my 11 losers for a net loss of just $12.90. So you can see, if you are even a slightly better picker than me, which wouldn’t be too hard, you would making healthy profits if you were to bet on games individually as opposed to three-team parlays. Of course, you can’t bet on games individually through Canada’s government-run sports “lotteries” such as Proline or Sport Select. Unless you go to Vegas, the only place you bet on games individually is online. As I’ve mentioned before, some of my favorite online sportsbooks include Bet365.com, Bwin.com, Bodog.com, Sportsbook.com and SportsInteraction.com. You can’t go wrong with anyone of these books. They’re all trustworthy, convenient and easy to
