Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks

The Coyotes are actually a very good road team, not only are they 7th in the league in scoring on the road (2.87) but they are 9th in goals allowed also (2.40). The Coyotes also have a better road record then they do a home record, going 9-5-1 away and 6-6-2 at home. Meanwhile, Anaheim is dead last in the Pacific division with just 21 points. Only Columbus has fewer points than the Ducks (20). Anaheim is 2-7-1 in its last 10 games and has dropped two straight. They also give up a lot of goals at home, third worst in the NHL allowing 3.31 per game. Have to lay a bit of a price here on the road with the Coyotes, but with a good road club I will fade the price here on Wednesday. Take Phoenix.

Kings Crown not Shining..

The Los Angeles Kings fired longtime coach Terry Murray. Murray, was replaced with assistant coach John Stevens. The underachieving Kings had Murray behind the bench for some of their best years, making the playoffs in back-to-back seasons after an eight-year absence from the postseason. As a longtime Los Angeles fan, I can go back all the way to the 70s when the Kings boasted the famous Triple Crown line of Dionne, Taylor And Simmer. Sure, they still didn’t win a lot of games but they were sure exciting to watch in those days. And then of course we had The Miracle on Manchester, when the Kings shocked Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs.

Then of course there was the Gretzky era. All of Los Angeles was abuzz when Wayne Gretzky left the Edmonton Oilers and brought his show to Hollywood. When Wayne Gretzky came to the LA Kings, it was chic to be a Kings fan. Tickets were being scalped for hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and celebrities frequently were seen at the games. This Kings fan even went to a preseason game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in an outdoor arena to watch the Kings and the Rangers play during the heat of the summer. Then came 1993, the one-year the Kings had a chance to win the Stanley Cup. With the Kings leading the series 2 games to one, and leading game three 2-1, the unthinkable happened. The Montréal Canadiens pulled possibly the biggest move of the series and it wasn’t even on the ice. They challenged the stick of Marty McSorley. McSorley, the enforcer for Gretzky, wasn’t even a goal scorer, yet the blade of his stick was illegal. You know the Canadians had this ace in their sleeve for some time and, they found just the time to use it. McSorley’s stick was found to be illegal and he was given a penalty, which led to the tying goal by the Canadians. That one call by the Canadians changed the whole direction of the series, as Montréal went on to win the Stanley.Not surprisingly, McSorley was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins the following summer. Even though the Kings would eventually re-acquire McSorley, the club was never the same.

Shortly thereafter, Gretzky would would retire and it would no longer be chic to be a Kings fan. The Kings went up and down but mainly they were down. They changed uniforms they change colors but they still remain the same, old, Kings. And now once again, the Kings make another change looking to improve on their future. If not for the stick of a player would normally didn’t even score goals, the Kings with at least likely have rewarded some of their fans with the Stanley Cup win. For us Kings fans, we will have to continue to watch as our beloved team continues down the path of self-destruction.

San Jose at Colorado (VER-TV)

San Jose travels to Colorado tonight for a Pacific division showdown. The Sharks are 15 – 10 – 2, while Colorado is 13-16-1. San Jose is seven, four and 1 on the road this season with a +11 differential. However, The Sharks have won just four of their last 10 games and have dropped their last two contests. Meanwhile, Colorado is 4-6 in their last 10 games. In addition addition, the Avalanche have lost three consecutive games. The Sharksour 28th in the NHL in penalty kill percentage. San Jose, averages 2.7 goals per game which ranks 14th in the league.The Sharks have lost four of their last five games and six of their last eight games. The Avalanche have the fifth best power-play percentage in the NHL. While Colorado has lost three straight games, they have won four of their last seven games. The Avalanche lost all three games on their recent road trip, but return home tonight for a home and home series against the Sharks. Look for the avalanche to gain at least a split in these two games we will take the home dog here on Tuesday evening. Play Colorado.

Reason: A couple of 4th place teams square off here on Monday as the New Jersey Devils take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Devils are 4th in the Atlantic division while the Lightning are 4th in the Southeast division. G Martin Brodeur expected to get the night off here on Monday. But since I’m taking the UNDER, I like this event. Brodeur is 6-8 this season with a lofty 3.18 GAA and a save percentage of just .884. Johan Hedberg will likely get the start tonight and he has been much better between the pipes. Hedberg is 8-5-1 with a 2.26 GAA and a save percentage of .915. But what I like about the UNDER here tonight is that neither of these clubs are good scoring teams. Tampa Bay is tied for 20th in scoring (2.52 GPG) while the Devils are 27th (2.32 GPG). But over the last seven games those numbers are even worse, with the Devils averaging just 2.29 and the Lightning coming in at 1.86. With Hedberg in the nets I like this UNDER even more and expect a tough game played between the blue lines here. Take the UNDER on Monday evening.
