1993 Montreal Canadiens

Canadian NHL teams face long odds

If you believe a Canadian team is going to hoist the Stanley Cup this year, you’re likely listening to your heart rather than your head.

A Canadian team has not won the Cup since Patrick Roy’s Montreal Canadiens defeated Wayne Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings in 1993. Since that time, a Canadian team has advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals only five times – Vancouver in 1994 and 2011, Calgary in 2004, Edmonton in 2006 and Ottawa in 2007.

This season, the odds are long that a Canadian team is going to end the 20-year drought and drink from Lord Stanley’s mug come June. SportsInteraction.com has listed the odds at +700 (7-1 or 8.00) for a Canadian team to win the Cup. Meanwhile, the odds of a Canadian team not winning are a humbling -2100 (1-21 or 1.05).

As for a Canadian team simply making the Stanley Cup Finals, the odds are still long at +350 (7-2 or 4.50) compared to -700 (1-7 or 1.14) for a team not making it.

In addition to odds on Canadian teams in the Stanley Cup Finals, listed below are odds on which Canadian team will have the most points at the end of the regular season and over/under odds on how many Canadian teams will qualify for the postseason.
